What information should you provide when sourcing PVC compounds?

Bring the end product, processing conditions, appearance targets and purchasing plan into one brief to make supplier discussions more specific.

Application examples: describe junction-box and cable-jacket requirements separately. KUOWEI supplies PVC compounds for these applications.

“We need PVC compound” starts a conversation, but it does not yet define a material requirement. A distributor may know the destination and order volume, while the manufacturer knows the tooling and finished-product requirements. A shared brief makes it easier to separate confirmed requirements from questions that still need answers.

Describe the finished product and the material’s role

Explain what the customer makes and where the compound will be used. A USB cable jacket and a molded connector cover may involve different processing stages. For an electrical junction box, identify the geometry, key wall thicknesses and assembly method. A photograph is a useful starting point; follow it with the relevant dimensions.

Include the destination market and service environment. Indoor or outdoor use, contact media and customer-specified standards are questions to clarify. Similar-looking products should not automatically be assigned the same formulation.

Separate essential requirements from open questions

Use three groups: mandatory, negotiable and not yet confirmed. If the customer has supplied a color reference but has not specified hardness, keep that distinction visible. An unresolved detail should not become an acceptance requirement by accident.

  • Appearance: color reference, transparency, surface finish and any agreed color tolerance.
  • Processing: injection molding or extrusion, equipment and tooling information, and current processing concerns.
  • Performance: test methods, units, specimen conditions and acceptance criteria. Always state the scale when specifying hardness.
  • Documentation: the technical information needed and the grade or batch to which it must apply.

Explain purchasing and trial requirements

State quantities with units and distinguish sample quantities, individual orders and estimated monthly demand. Include the destination, desired timing and packaging requirements. Supply terms need to be confirmed in the quotation and order.

When replacing an existing material, explain whether the aim concerns processing, appearance or a particular finished-product result. Check that reference data or samples can be shared before providing them. Photographs and broad product names do not replace defined acceptance criteria.

Build a brief the buyer and factory can check together

Use this list to collect the information. Mark unanswered items as “to be confirmed” rather than estimating them without a basis.

  • End product, material location, drawings or photographs, and critical dimensions.
  • Processing method, equipment information, target color and confirmed performance requirements.
  • Destination market, specified standards, documentation and acceptance tests.
  • Trial objective, sample quantity, recording method and expected purchasing plan.
  • Delivery location, preferred timing, packaging requirements and technical contact.

Connect the enquiry to a documented trial

Check the proposed grade, sample identification and corresponding technical information before agreeing on a trial with the factory. Recording the batch, processing conditions and finished-product results gives follow-up discussions a clearer basis. The formulation, machine settings and suitability still require technical confirmation and the agreed evaluation.

Discuss your requirements

Reference values support initial discussions. Confirm the current grade-specific technical data, units, test conditions and acceptance criteria before ordering. Application suitability depends on the agreed requirements and evaluation.
